Introduction to B-tool, and B-tool community (By Raichu)

The term B-tool community refers to a role-playing community based on an Active-X based Korean web drawing program called B-tool. (as corrected by: Xiaolin)

B-Tool in many ways is efficient to community users because of its instant commenting feature and its on-time uploading system. With such advantages, B-Tool communities enable easy interaction with many other users almost real-time.

In the beginning, B-Tool communities were just forums that utilized B-Tool as a type of web drawing program. However, in May 2003, a side menu in a site called ‘June-Net’ named ‘June Secondary school’ (which later changed to Saint Corona Academy) introduced a virtual community with a storyline; allowing it’s users to create characters for role playing with in the system. This became the basis for the B-Tool communities of today.

Here, the earliest B-Tool communities not only refer to using B-Tool as its base, but many other web-drawing programs such as Oekaki Rakukaki, Paint BBS as well. Today, it is hard to find such communities other than those of Quki.com, the official B-Tool distribution site, and Madoka’s Home page.

Recent B-Tool communities (now referred as ‘B-Tool communities’) set a limit on number and the setting so that the drawing within the community will be consistent and directed to the theme. For this reason, community administrator(s) set periods where they advertise their community and recruit new members.

Most B-Tool communities are made to encourage communication between members within the plot (and the characters created by other users) given by the administrator(s). Parts of B-Tool communities are Free B-Tool page (using the character applied in the community to draw non-story related items), Missions that run during set times, quests, duties or character’s behind stories, events, love line development, etc., that users complete on free will while remaining within the community. This routine became a set frame for some communities, while some that have divided, or skipped this part.

Search sites that able easier access to B-Tool communities has also been created (B-Com Search, CMC, etc), and B-Tool communities are becoming more and more standardized that pages such as ‘etiquette for B-Tool communities’ are being published.

B-Tool communities on a larger term can be categorized into ‘Story-based’, Interaction-based‘, and ‘mixed’. Story based communities are often stricter in terms of rules, and have a tendency of taking a form of a project where if a story line reaches a certain point, the community ends.

Simply put, B-Tool communities a type of role-playing that encourage friendship; with its unlimited possibilities of genre (common ones being fantasy, school life, SF, and parodies) and plot. The growth of B-tool community through association with other contents, operational methods, and rules are expected in the future.

However, in the midst of the recent increase on the number of B-Tool communities, problems such as: competition levels, user’s lack of etiquette and sense, administrator’s lack of experience, and exhaustion of the main B-Tool page (such as traffic) are yet to be solved.
